The biography of the late Fr. Lido Mencarini, P.I.M.E., the Community’s first chaplain, entitled Padre Lido - Missionario ed eroe nascosto tra Cantù e Hong Kong, was published in 2007. The book is available in Italian and Chinese.
A brief biography from PIME:
“Fr. Mencarini was born on 30 November 1916 in Lucca. He joined the PIME Institute on 28 October 1931, and was ordained a priest on 6 August 1939. During the war years, he was employed in various assignments within the Institute and in the apostolic work in Cantù. He left for Hong Kong arriving on October 14, 1947. Here, he was assigned to the Hoi Fung district; due to the worsening political situation he remained there until June 1949, when he was recalled to Hong Kong. He was appointed to several posts: as bishop’s secretary, Mission procurator (1953-1959), vicar general (1959-1967) for Bishop Bianchi, with whom he greatly cooperated on the development of the social and educational services of the Church including the very busy period when millions of refugees were arriving from mainland China. In 1967 he was again appointed diocesan procurator, a post he was asked to keep also by Bishop Francis Hsu, until 1985, when he was elected regional superior of PIME, and, the following year, also appointed procurator of the local PIME Procure. He remained regional superior until 1990, but continued to work in the financial commission. In 1990 he became consultant of the diocesan procure. He carried on these two assignments faithfully, until mid April 2007, just a few days before his death, on 2 May 2007.”

A few dozens of faithful attended the Requiem Mass offered for the holy souls in purgatory on November 3, 2012 at St. Michael’s Cemetery. In his homily, Chaplain Rev. Fr. Francis Li stresses that believers are saved solely by the grace of God, in particular the redemption by the blood of his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. To compensate for our sins and in hope of going to Heaven, we must not forget the power of Communion of Saints through which our good works help not only ourselves, but also others in Church, including the souls in Purgatory.
See “Salesian set for final profession” in Sunday Examiner for more information. Congratulations!
